Agri-environment Scheme Research

Derwent Water in the heart of the Lake District ESA

Pete Carey has been involved in the development of research projects evaluating the success and impacts of agri-environment schemes since the 1990s. He was part of a team that developed one of the first truly inter-disciplinary methods to look at the interaction of wildlife, landscape, historic and public aspects of any scheme globally (Carey et al 2003). That work was carried out on the Countryside Stewardship Scheme. Further work was undertaken to investigate the ESAs in England (Carey et al 2004) and recently he has been working on the Higher Level Stewardship (HLS) in England and the Campaign for the Rural Environment (CFE).

In the last two years he has been interviewing farmers about their attitudes to the environment.

In 1998 and 1999 Pete Carey managed and organised a habitat and vegetation survey of 500 farms in the Countryside Stewardship Scheme (Carey et al 2002). In 2001 and 2002 he organised the survey of  500 ESA farms. In 2007 he managed the field teams of the Countryside Survey
