To understand the distribution and abundance of species we need an understanding of how they fit into the landscape in which they live.
To understand species movement through the landscape requires both mathematical modelling techniques and detailed knowledge of the species involved. Pete Carey has produced scientifically novel approaches to the spread of species. This has included the application of climate scenarios to predict where species might go as the climate changes.
Since 2000 Pete Carey has been studying a group of meadows in the Picos de Europa to determine how the many orchid species that live there persist in an ancient farmed landscape that is under threat from intensification on the one hand and abandonment on the other. This work was partly funded by an Earthwatch grant.
